Run. Hide. Fight.

 

Recent national tragedies involving active shooter violence underscore the importance of threat management in the education setting, as these incidents are becoming more frequent.

In 2014, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a between 2000 and 2013 and found that the largest percentage of incidents—45.6%—took place in a commercial environment (73 incidents), followed by 24.3% that took place in an educational environment (39 incidents). The remaining incidents occurred at the other location types such as open spaces, military and other government properties, residential properties, houses of worship, and health care facilities.

While the likelihood of an active shooter incident at an institution of higher education is low (7.5%, FBI 2014), it is prudent to be prepared. The Old Dominion University Police Department (51³Ô¹ÏProPD) employs a number of strategies to increase the preparedness of our Monarch Community members to include the following:

  • Active Threat Training - 51³Ô¹ÏProPD provides training on the actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents framed by the FBI's "Run. Hide. Fight." Training.
  • 51³Ô¹ÏPro Active Threats Emergency Guide - The Office of Emergency Management supplies an Emergency Guide with information to help prepare the Monarch community.
  • Threat Education Assessment and Management Team (TEAM) - 51³Ô¹ÏProPD conducts training that educates community members on how to recognize concerning behaviors, as well as reporting options and intervention strategies.
  • Live Safe - This app allows users to anonymously send pictures, videos, and text tips to the nearest police station in real time.

51³Ô¹ÏProPD regularly presents active threat training at adjunct faculty orientations, annual staff trainings, and to student groups and organizations. Individual or customized trainings are also available upon request.

The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Augustine Agho, has reiterated the importance of the training programs we provide, saying, "The safety of our faculty, students, and staff is paramount. Over the last few months, Old Dominion University Police Department has conducted several threat assessment and active shooter workshops for faculty. I appreciate the willingness of 51³Ô¹ÏProPD to help our faculty understand 51³Ô¹ÏPro threat assessment policy and how to react in the event of an active shooter situation."
