Transition from Kaltura to Panopto

We are excited to introduce Panopto, a new enterprise video platform that will replace Kaltura at 51勛圖Pro for creating, managing, and delivering videos, particularly within Canvas courses. As our contract with Kaltura nears expiration, we have thoroughly evaluated potential replacements and are confident that the transition to Panopto will be a smooth one. Migration of existing content to the new platform will take place over the summer.

Panopto offers several benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Functionality: Panopto provides a more user-friendly interface and a wider range of features, making it easier to create, edit, and share videos.
  • Improved Accessibility: Panopto offers greater accessibility features, including automatic captioning and transcripts, which will benefit everyone using our video platform.
  • Seamless Integration: Panopto integrates seamlessly with Canvas, making it easy to incorporate videos into your courses.

We will begin the transition to Panopto mid-May. We understand that switching to a new platform may require some adjustments, so to help ensure a smooth transition, we are providing a variety of resources for students and employees at odu.edu/panopto.

Videos in Canvas Courses

  • We are actively working with Panopto to migrate all Kaltura content that has been uploaded or accessed since December 1, 2022. We will automatically update links to these videos within your Canvas courses by July 15 (Summer course content will be relinked by August 22).
  • You will not be able to upload new course content to Kaltura after August 22, 2025.
  • Videos began migrating on April 10, 2025. If youve made any edits or changes to videos since April 10, updated videos will be migrated and relinked, but you might泭see duplicates in your library.
  • Between now and August 22, content will look like this:
    • Panopto video content can be found in sections of Canvas called泭My Media-Panopto and "Media Gallery-Panopto."
    • Kaltura video content remains in sections called "My Media" and "Media Gallery."
  • Between泭August 22 and December 30, content will look like this:
    • Panopto content can be found in the泭"My Media" and "Media Gallery" sections.
    • Kaltura content is available in a read-only state in sections泭renamed泭"My Media-old" and "Media Gallery-old" until Kaltura is decommissioned. These sections will eventually go away.泭

Videos from Zoom and other non-course sources

  • Meetings recorded between December 1, 2022, and June 30, 2025, will be migrated and available to access in Panopto after May 12.泭Earlier recordings will be securely archived. Kaltura will stay online in read-only mode泭for the next few months, giving you plenty of time to verify your content, but we will keep a secure backup of the entire Kaltura library indefinitely. There is no risk of losing your videos. If you ever need an archived file restored after Kaltura goes offline, simply contact the IT Help Desk.
  • Zoom recordings since April 10, 2025, are currently being stored in Kaltura AND Panopto. All recordings since April 10, can be found in either place until June 30. (Meetings recorded during this window may end up being duplicated in Panopto after migration).泭
  • Links to Kaltura content from泭the 51勛圖Pro website or from an 51勛圖Pro泭WordPress site will be automatically redirected to the泭migrated Panopto content.

Access videos from Canvas or Panopto
