Mission

To maximize the impact of scholarly activity, the DCEPS Research Support Center will:

  • promote faculty, student and community interdisciplinary relationships,
  • establish platforms and networks to share new knowledge,
  • develop infrastructure for funding development and resource acquisition, and
  • support professional development and mentorship that leads to research excellence.

Faculty can visit the Center during open hours to request help with:

The Center will offer several structured initiatives for faculty interested in expanding their research and funding horizons:

  • Early Career Grant Workshops: Meet twice a month with the Center director to work through the grant process, offering intimate, tailored feedback in small groups.
  • Early Career Manuscript Workshop: Meet with the Center director to work through the manuscript process, offering intimate, tailored feedback in small groups.
  • Collaborative Enterprises: A new initiative where high-performing faculty will join an internal council, collaborating on large grant submissions.
  • Research Celebration Event: An annual event where faculty and doctoral students will have the chance to present their research ideas, spark interest for potential collaborations, and share accomplishments with the community.

  • Matchmaking Services: A database of research interests and expertise will help identify potential collaborators for grant proposals.
  • Data Center: A repository of data on grant submissions and successes, which we will leverage to enhance future funding opportunities.
  • Additional Services: The Center can be written into grants as a resource, and its services can be expanded based on the needs of Principal Investigators (PIs) and the roles they envision for us.

Director of the DCEPS Research Support Center

Dr. Haegele is the Colgate Darden Endowed Professor and Director of the Center for Movement, Health, & Disability in the Department of Human Movement Studies & Special Education at Old Dominion University (51³Ô¹ÏPro) in Norfolk, VA. His research focuses on how individuals with disabilities engage in physical activity, particularly within school-based physical education settings. This work is grounded in the interdisciplinary field of adapted physical activity.

Since joining 51³Ô¹ÏPro in 2015, Dr. Haegele has authored over 280 peer-reviewed publications and several books. His influence extends globally, with visiting professorships in Hong Kong and Austria, along with active collaborations across five continents. He is the director of Project CAPER and co-director of the MAMC, two U.S. Department of Education-funded initiatives that train doctoral scholars in adapted physical activity.

Dr. Haegele has a strong record of securing external funding, including federal, state, and foundation grants, as well as private gifts, to support his research, programs, and training efforts. Notably, among the many grants he has been awarded, he has been the Principal Investigator (PI) and co-PI on two major cross-university grants from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs, totaling over $10 million, as well as a Spencer Foundation grant. His extensive experience also includes serving as a consultant or contributor on numerous grants for faculty at 51³Ô¹ÏPro and other universities nationwide.

Dr. Katsioloudis is an Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Research at the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies at Old Dominion University. He has also served as Chair of the Department of STEM Education and Professional Studies, and Program Leader for the Industrial Technology program. Over the last 15 years, he demonstrated consistent growth by conducting research on improving teacher performance in STEM education, focusing on spatial visualization best teaching practices, and enhancing a national STEM-educated workforce; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in industrial technology/engineering and technology education; and serving his academic and professional communities.
